Vermeer, Girl with a Pearl Earring
Oil on Canvas
31 x 39cm framed with glass

Johannes Vermeer's famous artwork called "Girl with a Pearl Earring" which he painted in 1665 is adored globally. I will display my reproduction of this artwork at the exhibition "The Story of Blue". Vermeer was fond of the colour blue and his love for it made his family fall into financial troubles. Blue paint was very costly until a French chemist invented a synthetic version of ultramarine in 1826 which was named "French Ultramarine".

The Story of Blue

This exhibition will explore the complex history of the colour blue, from its ancient beginnings as a colour with no name,
to its associations with barbarism, right through to its modern-day ubiquity.

From early works of art that pushed their creators into debt, to the distinctive patterns of blue and white porcelain found in most homes today,
this show will celebrate the ways in which blue has been used to evoke a sense of the sky and the sea.

Along the way, it will explore how this colour has been both revered and reviled throughout the centuries, and why it remains Europe's favourite hue today."
